World Thalassemia Day 2022 – Theme, History, and Significance

On May 8th this year, the world will participate in World Thalassemia Day 2022.

With the advent of new blood tests and the ability to diagnose genetic blood disorders like thalassemia more accurately, World Thalassemia Day aims to increase awareness about this disease, which affects 270 million people worldwide

What is Thalassemia ?

Thalassemia is a blood disorder condition that occurs when a person has an insufficient number of healthy red blood cells. It is a serious, often genetically-inherited condition that affects the normal production of hemoglobin, resulting in health concerns like enlarged spleen and bone problems.

Thankfully, in most parts, Thalassemia patients are receiving the care and treatment they need, but that certainly doesn’t mean the disease is not impacting other parts of the world.

World Thalassemia Day 2022 Theme

Since the establishment of World Thalassemia Day, Thalassemia International Federation (TIF) comes up with a theme every year and plans and promotes activities related to it.

This year, our theme for World Thalassaemia Day is Be Aware. Share. Care. The theme is a clear call to spread awareness about this genetic disorder so that people living with it can get timely treatment that reduces their chance of heart disease or stroke-related complications in the future.

This theme asks every individual to contribute at their level. It is a powerful reminder that every one of us has a substantial role and responsibility in the fight against thalassemia.

So spread the informative and valuable word on Thalassemia disease. Do so to make people feel included and supported, not excluded or scared.

Significance and History

Thalassemia International Federation established The International Thalassemia Day in 1994, at the request of thalassemia experts from around the world who wanted to raise awareness about this serious genetic condition that can cause severe anemia.

Thalassemia awareness day aims to highlight this debilitating condition and encourage efforts toward preventing it. It also aims at increasing public understanding of thalassemia and its impact on patients’ lives.

It would help them get tested if they are carriers or affected by this disorder. It also aims to educate people about prevention methods for this hereditary disorder so that they can take necessary measures to avoid conceiving children who would suffer from this genetic disorder later on in life.

Participate in International Thalassaemia Day 2022 and help transform a million lives across the world!
