Diwali Cleaning Tips

Start Early to Make It Perfect

Cleaning an entire house is no cinch. Right from cleaning every corner of each room to painting the walls, it is a big deal for anyone. However, you can make it a little easy by dividing your work into different parts. For instance, you can clean the bathroom one day, the bedroom another day, and so on. Once you are done with every room, you can give a final touch-up cleaning.

What you can do is create a well-planned schedule (believe us, it works) and stick to it. Don’t leave everything for the eleventh hour. Be ready and get set go.

Get Diwali Cleaning Tools

After chalking out your cleaning schedule, make sure that you have all the cleaning supplies ready. For overall cleaning of your house, you will need simple things like a good disinfectant, cloth wipes, scrubs, brushes, brooms, garbage bags, among others. If you are allergic to dust and dirt, it is recommended to keep a scarf or mask handy.

Spruce Up Your Home

Now, you have made the plan and you have tools in hand. However, how do you go about it?

We suggest you start with your least favorite areas or things that will stay clean for at least a couple of weeks. You can start by organizing cupboards and it won’t even take much of your time. In the case of the kitchen area, you can organize and clean cabinets, go for chimneys and kitchen tiles the next. Divide the tasks into different days for efficient work.

Start Decluttering

Diwali safai is one of the best times to get rid of unwanted items hanging around in your house.

We recommend you to follow a one-year rule- anything which you haven’t used in the past year won’t be used in the future as well. This can include anything from clothes, gadgets, accessories or other items which you keep on storing. One best way to declutter is by donating these items to orphanages or shelters.

Your glass lamps and candle holders have been waiting for the next Diwali in the cupboard. It’s time to take them out and bring life back to them. Get rid of old candles and wicks from the candle holders and clean them with hot water and detergent.

Similarly, clean glass lamps with dry tissue paper by turning them upside down. Now, clean them thoroughly with hot water and detergent solution and let them dry.

Polish Brass Ornaments

Brass ornaments are one of the prime attractions in many Indian houses during Diwali. Clean these brass idols, vases, or lamps with great care. Prepare a mixture of half cup vinegar, one teaspoon, and flour to clean the metal ornaments carefully.

Diyas and Lanterns

We all have a good stock of hand-painted diyas and paper lanterns at our homes.

Although people usually buy a new set of diyas every year, some families might have heirlooms. In such a case, use a soft brush and dust them. Following this, wipe with a soft cloth. Make sure to not use any harsh cleaners as they might damage the surface.

Well, we understand that Diwali cleaning is a tedious task. Hence, you need a proper cleaning schedule to make it happen rather early. Also, don’t forget to take help from others or seek professional help if needed.
