How to Make Cake in a Pressure Cooker?

In this blog, we are going to show you how to make a pressure cooker cake without using an oven. Are you shocked to hear it? Well, we are accustomed to seeing the cake being baked in microwave ovens or OTGs. However, there are other ways for baking too.

If you are new to the baking world, you may wonder, why bake in a cooker?. Well, the reason is logical. The heavy base or bottom of the aluminum pressure cooker distributes the heat evenly. This property makes the cooker perfect for baking cakes, cookies, and muffins. You can also use a heavy bottom pan, Kadai, or pot at the place of the cooker.

This technique has been in use for decades, especially in India. Households in India do their daily cooking in cookers. So many people prefer to cook in the oven as they find investing in an oven an unnecessary expense.

Here is how you can make a cooker cake –

  1. Decide on a good, easy recipe for your cooker cake. Pretty much all cake recipes will bake well in a pressure cooker. Prepare the batter according to your recipe and set it aside.
  2. Use a pressure cooker of a minimum of 3 liters, but it would be great if you have a cooker of 5 liters. People even bake cakes in pressure cookers of 10 liters and get successful results, so size is not an issue. Your cooking time and the cake pan size is dependent on the cooker size.
  3. This is important – remove the rubber insulation (also known as a gasket) from the lid of your pressure cooker. Also, remove the whistle. Remember to not add water to the pressure cooker. Otherwise, you will be steaming the cake instead of baking. The heat generated in the cooker is enough to bake the cake.
  4. Some pressure cookers have a stand that goes at the bottom of the cooker. It helps evenly distribute heat when baking a cake. If you don’t have a stand, try to find an alternative to it. A small, thick steel plate is also a good substitute.
  5. Preheat the pressure cooker before starting the baking process. For preheating, place the lid on the pressure cooker and keep it on high heat for 2 mins.
  6. Now you can put the cake pan filled with batter in the cooker. Make sure you use a cake pan that easily fits inside the cooker leaving some space between the sides. Use a pot-holder to place the pot in the cooker since it will get hot after preheating.
  7. Now close the lid and cook it for 5 minutes on medium flame and then simmer the flame. The cake will take about 45 minutes to 1 hour to bake. The time depends on the size of the pan and cooker.
