Google Joins Layoff Trend | Plans to Fire 10,000 Poor-Performing Employees

Looks like the grim layoff season is not over yet. After Twitter, Meta, and Amazon, Google’s layoff news surfaces.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is reportedly planning to fire as many as 10,000 underperforming employees or 6 percent of its workforce.

Google had stood out so far by not cutting employees amid the rough global economic conditions. But as pressure builds on the company to improve the productivity of its workers, it plans to develop a new performance management system.

Under this new system, managers have been asked to categorize 6% of employees, or roughly 10,000 people, as low performers in terms of their impact on the business. It used to be 2% until now. They can also use the ratings to avoid paying bonuses and stock grants.

Alphabet has a workforce of nearly 187,000 employees. While there is no official confirmation from Google yet, CEO Sundar Pichai hinted at upcoming layoffs a while back.

Pichai was speaking at the Code Conference in Los Angeles, when he said, “we want to make sure as a company, when you have fewer resources than before, you are prioritizing all the right things to be working on and your employees are really productive, that they can actually, have an impact on the things they’re working on so that’s what we are spending our time on.”

Mega giant companies hired a lot of employees after the pandemic. But the global recession is forcing companies like Wipro, Meta, Accenture, Twitter, and Amazon to let go of a huge percentage of their workforce.
