Wipro Fires a Whopping 300 Employees! You Must Know Why!

Wipro, a leading Indian IT MNC, has taken a strong stand against the practice of moonlighting. The company fired 300 employees who had a second job after working hours in recent months.

Rishad Premji, the Wipro Chairman, stated this on Wednesday, September 21, while speaking at an AIMA event.

He said that moonlighting is a complete violation of integrity in its deepest form, and Wipro has no place for any employee who chooses to work directly with rivals while being on Wipro payrolls.

He added, “That is an open conversation that the organization and the individual can make a concerted choice about, on whether that works for them or doesn’t.” His statement was followed by a remark that Wipro’s competitors would feel exactly the same way if they were to discover the same situation.

Mr. Premji has been a vocal critic of moonlighting. Last month, he took to Twitter and equated the practice to ‘cheating’.

Moonlighting refers to pursuing more than one job at a time, usually without the employer’s knowledge. Companies in India have divided opinions over it, but remote working post-pandemic has helped employees moonlight with ease.
