Life Lesson #1: You are miserable, but are you aware of it?

You are miserable, but are you aware that you are miserable? Are you aware that there is a radical difference between how you perceive yourself and the way other people see you?

Trees do not see themselves as trees, do they? They simply grow. So is true for the fish in the water. The fish does not see itself as a fish; it just swims. It is the same with every creature on Earth. They only know what they have to do.

However, when humans come into the picture, everything becomes subjective and relative. A human being will always compare himself with somebody else and decide whether he is doing well or not, whether he is right or wrong, whether he is rich or poor. All these things become relative because it depends on with whom you are standing. In this way, everyone around you becomes your competitor. And if they are above you, they become your enemies; and if they are below you, they become your slaves – in any case, they become your competitors. The joy from life disappears when competition comes. 

Life Lesson #2: Kill the lies!

Beware of being confused by the millions of lies that are being fed to you. It’s not going to be easy, but you have to make a conscious effort to kill all the lies.

Think, identify, and kill one thing about you that is unnecessary for your life. Practice it every day. For example, you can kill your anger, ego, or laziness. 

Identify something without which you will be a better person. Kill that thing. Work on one thing every day, take baby steps. It is how you can transform your life for a better, peaceful life. 

When you kill lies, you come closer to the truth of your life. But remember, when you kill something, it is dead, and it should not pop into your life again. 

So as per Sadhguru’s life lessons, move towards the truth of your life step-by-step. 

Life Lesson #3: It is no good and bad

You look at something and think of it as good, and you look at another thing and think of that as bad. When you label something as good or bad, you contaminate the world with your perception and opinions. 

If you do not see the good in something, it becomes bad. If you can see the good in something, it turns into gold. Everything we have is a mixture of both. But if you start seeing only the bad in things, then nothing will work out for you. Because life is a mixture of both good and bad, but more good than bad.

By stating this, Sadhguru teaches that what makes an action good or bad is your perception of it, not the action itself. Your expectations from that action label it as good or bad.

Life Lesson #4 Life is about happiness

The goal of life is to be happy. If you do not know how to be happy, it doesn’t matter what else you know.

There are two aspects to happiness – One that is created by your mind and another which is your natural state. The second one cannot be created; it can only be realized. As a kid, your natural state of mind was simply happy. If you go against your nature to be happy, you cannot cherish other great possibilities in life.

Life Lesson #5 Don’t fear sufferings

One of the most important Sadhguru’s life lessons is that suffering is an essential part of your growth process; otherwise, death would be the end of life’s adventure for you. To live with joy, you must accept suffering as an inevitable part of your existence.

When you start meditating or doing yoga asanas, you initially become aware of all the tensions in your body and then gradually lose them. Similarly, these tensions will also vanish from your mind.

Life Lesson #6 The drama is in the journey of life

You are born, and then you die, is a simple expression. If it was just the event, it would not be so dramatic. The drama is in the journey that happens between birth and death. The problem is that we have never looked at life as a journey. 

This process of life begins with something as simple as a thought, which develops into an emotion, which leads to a feeling, and then to an impulse — what you call an action — which becomes a habit and then becomes the way you conduct your life. When you look at your life, you find it as a huge accumulation of habits. Because even if you are not aware of it, your body knows how to digest food, your heart knows how to pump blood; in the same way, your brain knows how to think in a pattern. 

It’s so mechanical that some people go crazy because they cannot handle that slavishness.

Life Lesson #7 Happiness comes when you are at peace with yourself

Life is life, but you have to make it palatable. If you live in a place that makes you fight for water and food, your life will be different from someone who lives in a place with plenty of resources. It’s not because one situation is better than the other; it’s just how life is.

Trying to make a bad situation good is a waste of time, but trying to make a good situation better is not. You can always make the present situation better than it is. 

Life Lesson #8 Make yourself happy, not the world

Life is about finding happiness. But the problem with most people is that they want to be happy by making everyone around them happy, and everyone around them wants to be happy by making everyone else around them happy. So what happens? Everybody around you becomes miserable because they are trying to make you happy and vice versa. That’s how the world functions today: everybody trying to make each other happy, which only makes everybody miserable!

How do we get out of this mess? We have to begin by realizing that happiness isn’t about making someone else happy. Happiness comes from within – if you are at peace within yourself, you don’t need to be at peace with anyone else, and no one needs to be at peace with you either!

Life Lesson #9 Life is a gift – It is a blessing and a festival. And that is how you should live it.

Treat life as if you are going to live forever, but prepare as if you are going to die tomorrow.

Life will teach you and guide you if you allow it. If you become open and willing, it will show you the way. If you don’t learn from your own experience, life will always continue to be a mystery to you, because no one else can tell you and show you what life is about. Others might tell you something, but they cannot show it to you directly because they cannot go within themselves and bring out their own experience. Only we can make it work for us.

If we want to know the truth of life, we have to find out ourselves. Other people’s opinions or ideas are just circumstantial; they may be true or may not be true for your situation. Therefore, the only wise thing is to go within yourself and see for yourself what life is all about.

All of the Sadhguru’s life lessons are simple yet carry deep meaning within them. If you try to grasp the meaning and adopt it in life, you can every day lead towards a better and more happy life.
